R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. The band’s original lineup consisted of Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass), and Bill Berry (drums). R.E.M. is known for its jangly, guitar-driven sound and its literate, intellectual lyrics. The band released 15 studio albums, including its 1983 debut album “Murmur” and its 1992 album “Automatic for the People,” which spawned the hit singles “Man on the Moon” and “Everybody Hurts.” R.E.M. was commercially successful and critically acclaimed, and it won several awards throughout its career, including a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The band disbanded in 2011.
